MedModus’s Theatre Capacity Review for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital was very comprehensive.  It went beyond merely studying existing capacity to incorporating future demand factors associated with children’s outpatient waiting lists and medical inpatient bed requirements. The review, complete with detailed supporting analysis and recommendations, brought clarity to the theatre capacity decisions we had to make for the future”.

Case Study: Population Forecasts

MedModus was asked by a large Dublin teaching hospital to forecast how the population of older people in the hospital’s catchment will change over the next 20 years. Using census data, a predictive analytical model was developed to forecast and spatially analyse the population of older people. Below you will find an interactive report showing the findings of this study for the 4 administrative counties of Dublin for people aged 60 years and over. This report allows you drill down and filter by county, electoral division, age group and gender.

Dublin has high projected growth in older people over the next 20 years, with a projected increase of 70% (+157,000) in people aged 60 and over. This projected growth increases to 90% (+67,000) when looking at those aged 75 years and over. Growth in the numbers of older people is not evenly spread throughout these counties however. Fingal and South Dublin will see an increase of 188% (+18,000) and 170% (+19,000) respectively. Significant pressure will be put on healthcare organisations to maintain and improve the level of care they provide to the people in these areas as the older population increases. This pressure will be worsened in the areas that have higher projected growth than the rest of the region (i.e. Fingal and South Dublin). Understanding how demographics will change is an important aspect in developing an effective service plan.
